July 2009

Summer is in full swing and I find it hard to believe it is already the end of July. Owen, Brady and Lily are having such a great time and watching them I find myself reminiscent of being a young girl enjoying Wisconsin’s lakes, pools and parks. But somehow it is a lot more work now, funny to be a parent and realize that your childhood “summer fun” meant so much work for someone else…and for me and my siblings that was my mom. Thankfully I have a husband who loves to be a dad and helps out as much as he can. But even so, the work/life balance is exhausting!

Sharecipe is off to a great start even in these “light” cooking months of summer. People are joining and adding recipes every day which is very positive. Of course I have the inevitable stressful “what did we do” moments that all entrepreneurs have…but to remedy these all I have to do is go on the site, pick a recipe, make the meal, enjoy it with the family and the stress goes down. Then I remember “this is why we did it”!

Our challenge now is to get the word out, which these days is more complex than ever with such a diverse media landscape…blogs, twitter, facebook, foodie this, group for that, blogher conferences (one for food in SF in the fall…oops sold out already ? help!). We have had success with local/national papers and local magazines but are in uncharted territory trying to navigate the social media world. Thankfully another local Madison company, Alice, just launched and we get to watch them do it, and do it WELL! Now if they would only talk to us….we must not have hit it big time yet. Will let you know when we do.

But in the end it is all about food and family. So I am going to make myself lunch and find my family. TGIF.
